Lesson 4 : Girl Power! Peer mentoring via Videoconferencing
Objective:
Seventh grade Belhaven students will learn how to become mentor leaders through activities with third and fourth grade Seaview students. Belhaven students will help fourth graders transition to Belhaven the following year.
Materials:

  • Seaview School and Belhaven School classrooms, each with videoconferencing equipment
  • Student journals, pencils

Procedure:
Third and fourth grade students from the club “Girls on the Go” will videoconference each quarter with seventh grade Belhaven students. Female Belhaven students will have gone through an introductory mentor training session and choose topics (surviving middle school: bullying, self-esteem, body image) appropriate for sharing with elementary school students. There will be self- and group reflection activities before and after each session. School staff (counselors, teachers, nurse) will allow older students to lead videoconferencing sessions, formulate topics and questions. Culminating activity will be younger students attending part of the seventh grade “Girl’s Sleepover” at Belhaven and meeting their mentors in person.
